Welcome to my blog

My name is Maika, I’m an 18 year old student from Switzerland. I’m a vegan and I enjoy healthy cooking and baking. I love experimenting in the kitchen, taking pictures of my creations and sharing them with others. That’s why I started this blog. It is also my big and final project in my last year of school.

Here, I post recipes that are easy to prepare, (mostly) healthy and of course delicious. I like to try out new things, which means that you will find a large variety of recipes: some gluten-free, refined sugar-free or raw ones, but also some not-so-healthy ones. I also think it is important to eat fresh, seasonal and organic food.

This picture is from 2012: I’d made Dampfnudeln, a meal that me and my siblings love, as you can see.

I started cooking once a week when I was 13. I enjoyed it a lot and often took pictures of the food to be able look back and see what I had made. Over time, I started becoming more aware of what I eat and I decided to try to eat less meat.

In 2014, I spent one term abroad, in England. I continued to cook occasionally, especially typically Swiss meals. I also enjoyed trying and tasting new things and I found that English food isn’t as bad as everyone had told me. My host sister was a vegetarian and when I went back to Switzerland I decided to fully stop eating meat.

Since then, I have become more and more conscious of what I eat. I started to eat a lot healthier and a lot less animal products. So while a year ago, I probably would’ve told you that my favourite food is pasta or maybe pizza or (meatless) lasagna, my answer would be a lot different now: I love sweet potatoes, curries, avocados, dates and nuts, and all kinds of fruits and vegetables. I’ve become very interested in diet, health and nutrition and over the last year, I started to learn more about the impacts that our food has on us and our environment and I became more and more passionate about the ethical aspects of eating.

I’m in my last year of school now and we have to make a big project of our choice before we graduate: this is mine. I decided to create a food blog in English, because it combines cooking, photography and English, which are all things I enjoy a lot. I have always wanted to start a food blog one day, so it seemed like a perfect project for my last year of school. That’s why I started “Maikasfoodblog” in May 2016.

It has been a very exciting journey and I am very glad that I decided to do this, as it has been a great experience that has taught me a lot. The biggest impact this has had on me is that during these months I decided to go vegan. Spending so much time in the kitchen, making food and thinking about it, has shown me that I no longer want to consume any animal products.

Check out my personal favourite recipes:
(I have a bit of a sweet tooth, if you can tell)

Banana Cinnamon Cookies with Cranberries (so simple and so delicious – I must have baked these about twenty times)

Currant Tarte Tatin (upside down tart with shortcrust pastry, a French dessert)

Sweet Potato Wedges with Cinnamon (the perfect combination of savoury and sweet + a combinaton of two of my favourite foods: sweet potatoes and cinnamon)

Birchermüesli (Berry Overnight Oats, typically Swiss breakfst)

Strawberry-Spinach-Walnut Salad (pears or oranges make a grat substitute for when the strawberries are out of season)
